sorry I haven't been blogging in a while. After our last canoe trip and bdays I sent my camera in for repair only to find out it is unrepairable. They offered me a buy up option for my camera so now I have the newest model. All canoers should know how to swim thus the girls have been taking swimming lessons this fall. They have been doing really well so we rewarded them by taking them to a pool. So those pics along with Christmas and others are what follows. Enjoy!

Chippewa National Forest canoe trip

We had a great canoe trip in Chippewa National forest. Caught lots of fish, swam, and portaged all over. Because it is a national forest (not like the BWCA) ATVs are permitted and the first night we have VERY loud neighbors tearing up the woods till 2:30 am on the other side of the lake. But the next night was very quite after they left. We also got caught in a small but solid thunder storm on the lake. The waves weren't to bad in the middle, however the wind did tip over trees on the shore line while we paddled. Unfortunately for us, it also tipped a tree over on our car at the boat launch, but we didn't find that out till the next day. The damage was only to the roof rack and a dent to the roof. Over all it was a great trip, the kids and us had a TON of fun!

On our last day of school I took the kids canoeing for a field trip. We studied the ecosystems of a pond. Then later on Mother's day we took the kids fishing at a state park.

Charlotte Mason Theory of education

As you all know I home school my kids and my philosophy for education best matches up with Charlotte Masons theory of education. For more info please read this Wikipedia article. So that being said; I thought it would be fun to post the four curriculum's I found that line up with her theories:

The first the one I chose to educate my children. It is called My Fathers world.
The next one I almost bought but it cost more than MFW. This one is called Living Books Curriculum
Then the other one is a free curriculum. All you have to do is check out the books at the Library. But I didn't like all the extra work that took. But if someone wanted to give a CM homeschooling experience for free and loves going ot the Library; this one is called Ambleside
Finally, I just learned about this one. It seems to be priced about the same as MFW. This one is called Queen home school

In an effort to save money, time and space I am trying this new method of developing our basic every day pictures. Right now at the rate I am going I'll have over 100 photo albums by the time I'm a grandma. So I'm going to try an consolidate our events into formats like these below. I'll try it out for a while and let you know how it goes. But as you can see, below I took 13 pics and made them down into one 4x6 thus saving space in my photo albums.

For really good pics I'll still print them on their own. But for now I think this may work

Wow, summer was like fall and now fall is like winter. Good thing I LOVE winter! But it is sad that the canoeing season with kids has come to a close. oh well.

The girls have started swimming lessons again. This is Ashlynn's first lessons without me. She did great!

First snow! The girls were so excited! We had so much planed for this day, but had to take a break to enjoy it.

September canoeing

Today after I was done at Church we took the kids canoeing and fishing. There was a campsite I wanted to scout out for future canoe trips. We had a great mini trip! I hooked onto a huge fish that ripped out drag and then broke my hook. Anna caught a CLAM on her hook! lol. We found the camp sites we were looking for and they looked great. Then an Eagle landed 10 feet from us!

First week of home schooling has gone great! Anna is in Kindergarten now; and because we never took a break from reading over the summer, she is reading better than a 1st grader. This week we went canoeing in the pond and went to Prizim- our home-schooling co-op. Great times!

Well its not secret that I LOVE to exercise! I can't get enough of it. And today toped it all (not counting camping of course). I walked 3 1/2 miles on the treadmill, got in 40 minutes of canoeing with the kids (by myself!) and biked 5 miles! What a great day. Here are pics of our little mini canoe trip! Enjoy!

Yard work weekend

Well the last couple of years we spend all summer canoeing/camping. Well the yard work has deteriorated because of this. So this weekend, instead of doing my hearts desire.. canoe camping, we did yard work weekend! Dave got a lot done! He spend 5 hours on Sunday building a bridge over our ditch. Here are the rest of our accomplishments: fix door frame, fix door closer, sand trim, paint trim, clean entry way closet, clean storm shelter, clean computer room, fix convertible couch, fix the girls beds, fix girls windows, fix bathroom sink, and fill in dog holes. Oh I also took some time out to take the kids to the beach with a friend. That was fun!

Bug sprays

I was asked about bug sprays for mosquitoes and wood ticks. First off, wood ticks could care less about deet. So you need to buy permethrin. This is sold at walmart and you DO NOT put it on your skin (also kids can not touch it when wet). you apply this to your clothes and once dry it repels ticks 100%. It is good for 20 washes I believe and can be found at Walmart

Now for Mosquitoes I HIGHLY recommend Ultrathon by 3m

This is a new type of bug spray in that it CAN NOT be absorbed into the skin. So once you spray it on you will not get it in the blood. There fore it is the only safe bug spray with deet in it for kids. This can be applied to the skin (but not near eyes, nose or on hands where they will eat it) and will last 8 hours easy (unless washed off). You buy this at cub foods

Three notes:

Never spray 100% deet on your skin.. you will get very sick
When you apply deet to sun screen it will break down the sunscreen. So 60 spf will become 30 spf.
Always wear a good hat, this takes care of the flies

Last week the girls and I were watching "Emergency" (tv show from the 70's) and in it was a women that was hurt. Anna looks at me and says "mom what happens to us if you and dad die?" I say "well most likely you would go to live with your grandparents". Anna pauses for a moment then says, so when are you going to die?

Well we are up north right now and they had a blizzard here. My husband forgot to bring my camera in from the car and by the time he got it for me it broke. Its so cold here that the plastic door snapped in half on it. Looks like I need a new one

Got up this morning with Logan at 5 am. The weird thing was our baby monitors weren't working but lucky my mommy instinct was! So I head up to his room and his heat fan is still running (his room is very drafty) however his light wont turn on. In fact I soon discovered we have random power outage! Some lights worked some didn't. So I woke up Dave at 6 and told him to check the breakers. But none are tripped? Thats when we discovered that it is so random that one outlet will be out on the left but not on the right. Ok that is FREAKY! So we called an electrician and he told us to call the power company. Of course the important things aren't working like the furnace or the well pump, but random unnecessary things are like the Fish tank. So we start the wood stove up and warm the house to a more comfortable temp. They come out at 8 am (told Dave he had to be late to work) and as they are looking around our neighbor drives up to tell the workers that his house is the same. So off they go to his house (right after they turn off all the power to ours). At 9:30 all the power comes back on, and Dave heads to work. What a way to start the morning!

Our Strong Willed Child

I thought I would share with you what its like living with a true strong willed child. Keep in mind that I was a preschool teacher for 10 years so to me she really isn't that bad. However she does have her bad times. Here are her top most difficult times so far:

Eating an entire tub of margarine
Breaking eggs over the piano
Smearing red jello over the carpet
covering her entire room in poop and herself and teeth
Killing frog for fun till we told her if she kills any more she will eat them (teaching respectful hunting)
Sneaking out of her room at night to steal food
Dumping out the entire hall closet
Sneaking out of her room at night to play (we now have an alarm on her door so no more sneaking lol)
Trying to take her brother out of his crib at 1 week old (we now have a lock on his door to keep him safe)
Painting the entire computer room in kids paint.. floor, walls, computers, couch, everything
and now
cutting 90% of the christmas ornaments strings off

The birth story

Logan was born on Oct 17th at 7:06 pm. He weighs 5 pounds 15 oz and is 18 1/2 inches long.
So for the last 2 weeks before Logan was failing his BPP's but passing his nst's. They really were debating inducing at 38 weeks but they wanted to wait till he was at least 6 pounds on the growth scans. 2 times they almost changed there minds but because he did so well on the nsts they let it go. Well at 39 weeks 4 days they decided it was time and not to weight any longer (i'm high risk). So on Oct 16th they had us come in at 7 pm to do a cervix softening since I was only 1 cm dilated but my cervix was hard and 4 cm long. They hooked me up to an nst and watched. Logan passed easily but they asked if I was having contraction. I said no just braxton and hicks and they said no those are contractions. I said well they don't hurt and they said hu. They were 8 minutes apart. There was no room in the hospital for us because it was a full moon so they left us in triage and put in the meds. We watch tv till midnight while the b/h continued (or what they said was contraction) then finally a room became available and they admitted us. Turns out we went to the same room that we gave birth to dd2!. They set us up in there then put in more meds. They then gave me this wonderful sleeping pill that make me feel like I was hanging in a hammock and I went to sleep. i woke up at 3 am as labor had started! They checked me and i was 3 cm dilated and starting to efface. So they broke my water and for the next 30 minutes I started walking and doing the exercise ball. Then they checked me and i was 4cm and 80% effaced so I asked for an epidural then we went to sleep till 5 am. Woke up and they check and i was 8 cm! Waited some more and at 6:50 I was 100% So they told me to push when i felt like it and at 7:06 logan was born! I didn't tear but I did get a huge hemorrhoid (would have rather teared!). He was 100% fine as was I. Over all that was the easiest Labor of my life and we never needed the pictosin. My dh was amazing threw all of this and I am really proud at how great he did.

For the last who knows how long Anna has been getting up at night playing and eating food very quietly. We find out in the morning what she was up to. Well this isn't' safe! So we bought a door alarm for their bed room door! Now when she sneaks out we all will wake up. This is the only solution I could think of and it worked last night. But Dave is worried it will teach her not to use the toilet at night. I explained to her the only thing she is aloud to do at night is use the bathroom and that the alarm will let me know if she is up. She said.. but then how will I get my night time snacks? I said you won't! Your not aloud to eat at night! Kids!!

God answers prayers! Logan did well today in his tests. He still didn't practice breathing (don't worry I asked, this will not effect breathing once his is born), but his cord looks great as does everything else. He is 6 pounds now to! So they will do ripening on Thursday night then induce Friday morning! This is only 3 days early.. the same time that Ashlynn came. So who knows what will happen. Keep praying, God is good!

Just a matter of when. He has more tests on Monday and if he doesn't pass them, then Tuesday it is. I'm praying he does pass the bpp so he can get a little bit bigger and so my body can better prepared for Labor. But it is up to God and the team of experts. Prayers are appreciated!

With Logan coming in less than 4 weeks I finally got our new tent. We will need a tent that can hold at least 5 people and a dog yet still hold up to the BWCA, back packing and camping. So I found the Casa 6. It is a 6 person tent but only weight 12 pounds. That is so light for such a big tent. Here are the pics:

I got my flu shot! :)

I am a strong believer in vaccines. Ever since I started getting the shots years ago I haven't ever had the flu. My girls have never had it and Dave hasn't either. And now new studies out there now prove that getting the flu shot in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy also protects the baby after it is born! This is so exciting to me because I do worry the first 6 months. Now I just pray they guessed right this year (last years shot was only 55% effective.. but we still avoided the flu!)

stitches are out

Well Dave's stitches are out! I think it is healing nicely. His bone is still broken so they put it in a splint for the next EIGHT WEEKS! So he won't be able to use it till after Logan is here. But praise God he still has a finger!!!! Here is a pic:

Band-aids and fingers

Anna got a paper cut on her finger. So I put a band-aid on it. Well she thought that wasn't good enough so she snuck and got the band-aids and covered her finger with band-aids so she can be just like dad. Then she had so much fun she covered her Dolly and the bed. Here is how Dolly turned out.

Here is Dave's finger with 9 out of the 12 stitches removed. On Monday he will get the rest of the stitches out. His broken bone will take 6 weeks to heal.

My Canoearoos

My Canoearoos are crazy today. They dumped out the linen closest in under 5 minutes because they thought it was 'fun'. But they don't think that the cleaning is very fun at all. Why do I have a feeling if Logan wasn't in my tummy he would have been a part of this to?

Another finger story

So today at one of my many many many many many many doctor appointments, I was telling the ultrasound tech Dave's finger story. At that same moment we were looking at Logan's fist. Right when I finished.. at the very end of the story where I said it was Dave's pointer finger; Logan pointed his pointer finger on cue!!! It was so funny the tech and I just started to laugh and laugh. Here is that pic...

Dave almost cut his finger completely off today

We just got back from the er how scary! Everyone who I called...your prayers worked; the finger didn't come off all the way (only 75%); it was still hanging on by 25% skin on the bottom. By the grace of God he didn't cut threw the tendon. And the break was clean threw so much so they didn't need to do surgery. He also didn't damage the knuckle, so God must have taken care of that as well. He got a lot of stitches, and the doc say he has a 90% chance of full recovery.

As to what happened.. he dropped a big log on it and it pinched it between a log and a sharp spot on the log splitter. Now we wait for the numbness to wear off, then the pain will kick in and he will be on meds. He still thinks he can go to work tomorrow.. we shall see.

Hay in one er visit we just maxed out our high deductible so the baby should now be 90% covered.

Went fishing this weekend

We decided to take the girls fishing yesterday

They were very excited

Ashlynn loves canoeing lol.

Anna caught a lot of sunfish.

Anna was concentrating on where the fish could be.

The weekend before we went to Duluth and went on the a boat tour.

My New Gazebo!!

My last gazebo (of those medal tent ones) blew over in a storm at the end of May. I was upset because I wanted to upgrade to a wood one but couldn't afford it. Well I saved up and by mid summer I had 400$. But Dave said you cant find a nice gazebo for that price. Well thanks to Craigslist; look at what I found!! It is normally 2000-3000$ at Sams club; but I got it for 300$. My dad, dave and my brother helped to set it up today.

Our latest adventure- bobber belly

We headed up north to our friends house near Two Harbors this weekend. I had two goals, to see the tall ships and to make a bobber belly:

Then after I painted it I wanted to go float in the pond. But I couldn't float on my back without an inner tube. So here is that pic:

BWCA Trip!

This is our trip to the BWCA on Island river. Some of the pictures will be out of order so I'll just describe as we go. We went with our two friends from Two Harbors and some other friends that have a 12 week old baby. The baby did GREAT and we all had a good time. Here are my pics!

Our dog cedar loves the BWCA- well everything except the bugs. She did spend one entire day hiding under the rain fly of our tent to avoid the flies lol.

Our black raspberry patch is ripe! So we took the girls berry picking. They ate more than they saved though lol. We also went to Elk River to shop and just got missed by a mile from a Tornado. However we didn't see it and we are trained spotters; so I think it was just people over reacting. Very fun day!!!

Rum River Canoe Trip

This weekend we went camping with the in-laws at a campground along the Rum River. On Saturday our family took a small canoe trip down the Rum.

The girls were very excited to get started. But once on our way the feel of the canoe lulled Ashlynn to sleep. She slept threw the entire trip!

We were surprised to find a small water fall along the Rum. This area does not have falls. So we wonder if it was from the recent floods?

Over all it was a great trip! We stayed next to the playground and we also went swimming in the pool and played disk golf. Most of the food was cooked over the campfire. It was a great time had by all!
